Research Specialist 1 - M.S. Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Program – Georgetown University Medical Center

Our program is designed around providing Master’s students with an experiential and methodological learning environment that will lay the groundwork for future careers in academia and industry.

Job Overview

The Research Specialist 1 teaches multiple advanced in-person lab courses offered by the program and provides co-mentorship/ supervision of research internship students in primary job responsibilities that include but are not limited to:

  • Provides lab management, organization and maintenance of the M.S. Biochemistry research internship labs and the cell culture teaching labs

  • Co-mentors, trains, and supervises research internship students to complete their internship projects in the department, and trains them in different cell culture, biochemical and molecular biology techniques

  • Assists the Program director in researching and developing additional reagents (DNA constructs, established cell lines, etc.) for use in internship projects

  • Teaches as lab instructor for three lab-based courses in the program, including Applications of Cell Culture (spring), Programmed Cell Death lab (fall), and Immunotechniques in Biochemistry (fall) lab courses for the graduate students

  • Assist professors in preparing and proctoring exams for program courses

  • Assist in ongoing biomedical research and development projects of the program director and graduate faculty in the MS Biochem program.

Work Interactions and Work Mode Designation

Reporting to Dr. C. Rosenthal, the Director of the M.S. Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Program, the Research Specialist 1 works with other lab instructors and research specialists in the program; interacts with students through the lab courses and internship projects; and as needed, interacts with GUMC faculty, staff, and administrators.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree

  • 3 or more years of experience [note: consideration will be given to and equivalent combination of required education and experience]

Preferred Qualifications

  • M.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

  • At least 1year of experience in biomedical or biotechnology research – preference for teaching skills in same

  • Advanced use of MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint), Prism, and advanced use of email and web-based applications
