Our Finland locations include Vantaa and Joensuu, employing over 800 professionals in R&D, production, supply chain, quality, marketing, sales, and administrative support. We are currently seeking a highly qualified and experienced Director for Research & Development, to lead instrument research & development in the Biomarkers, Automation and Instrumentation (BAI) business. Our laboratory automation and clinical chemistry, immunoassay and industrial analyzers platform R&D teams are located in Vantaa, Finland, and in Nimes, France.

In this role you would provide inspirational leadership, manage the R&D activity to develop high-value products and improve the current product offering as determined by the division and business unit strategy. You will work closely with internal and external partners to lead innovation and ensure on-time and on-budget delivery of outstanding products.

The Director, R&D, is a member of the BAI Business Unit leadership team and collaborates with the Product Management, Operations, Quality/Regulatory, Finance and other functions to accomplish the goals. The position reports to the General Manager, Instrumentation.

What will you do

  • Lead the product development activities from concept through regulatory clearance and commercialization, using the Thermo Fisher Scientific stage-gate product development process.

  • Co-operate closely with Product Management, R&D and Program Management to plan and implement timely development and introduction of high-quality new products.

  • Drive the implementation of product changes to optimize product performance, quality and reliability, production efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Ensure quality systems and product development processes are effectively maintained and in compliance with quality and regulatory requirements (IVDR/GMP/FDA/ISO-13485)

  • Promote a culture of creativity, intensity, innovation and continuous improvement in the R&D.

  • Maintain strong connections to peers within Clinical Diagnostics Division and other Thermo Fisher divisions to allow for benchmarking of processes, transfer of technology and generation of new product ideas.

  • Lead R&D budgeting and resource planning consistent with business unit objectives; assure maximum utilization and efficiency of all resources. Implement and review R&D monthly financial and resource utilization metrics.

  • Drive organization and talent development, including recruiting, training, professional development and performance management.

  • Track technological advances in analyzers and automation products in order to prepare a vision for future product portfolio.

Minimum Requirements for Experience and Skills

  • Extensive R&D experience, preferably for diagnostic platform development. At least 5 years in a leadership role

  • Experience in a role involving formal verification, design transfer and EU/US regulatory clearance of In Vitro Diagnostic

  • Demonstrated skills in project management and a track record of driving execution and creating empowering and goal-oriented working environment

  • English language proficient, Finnish an advantage.
