PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

As the Assistant Chief Engineer, you will ensure safe, reliable infrastructure and cost effective engineering services for all Track assets on the geographic territory to permit the safe and efficient train operation. You will directly provide or ensure professional oversight and compliance with corporate policy and regulatory/engineering standards.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

• Accountable to safely execute track maintenance, track production, and structures work to deliver a safe reliable track and bridge infrastructure to meet operating commitments

• Leads response to railroad service emergencies to ensure safe, timely service restoration

• Leads immediate drill down investigation and implementation of effective, sustainable corrective actions for safety and service failures

• Delivers compliance with applicable regulatory maintenance and policy standards for track maintenance and structures maintenance

• Supports Territory Directors Track & Structures and Senior Engineers with project scope detail planning

• Works with Staff to Develop One Pagers – Capital/SMA project Planning

• Coordinates Discipline/Investigations for Division/Territory and Manages grievance/Time Claim Response

• Coordinates support for Utility Crews

• Provides Weekend/AV coverage

• Development/mentoring using Consequence Leadership techniques for Director Track & Structures, Senior Engineer, and General Road Master Positions

• Manages contract/projects as assigned for Territory Work

• Accountable for Winter/Spring/Fire Planning

• Conducts Quality Control Inspections/monitors Correction for Track Production work

• Leadership accountability for inputs and outputs of safety, service, productivity, people, and financial metrics

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

• Engineering graduate preferred (exception for non-university graduates provided sufficient railroad engineering experience of 15+ years (or equivalent) and demonstrated performance in railroad engineering work)

• Civil Engineer/Professional Engineer preferred

• 15+ Experience (or equivalent) in the maintenance railway physical plant preferred

• Good understanding of track maintenance, track renewal, structures maintenance and signals & communications maintenance

• Good knowledge of accounting principles and financial statements

• Demonstrated capability to apply relevant knowledge and technical skills to monitor adherence to CPKC policies and standards as well regulatory requirements

• Capability to develop and manage a project plan/schedule

• Proficient at Consequent Leadership skills and techniques

• Ability to simultaneously manage priorities and ensure delivery of key performance metrics during emergency and non-emergency operations

• Ability to influence peers, cross functional co-managers and Executive leadership team

• Ability to work with people, with integrity

• Ability to drill down, understand root cause and resolve complex issues

Management Conductor Program:

Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CPKC. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
