Pacific Northwest National Laboratory PhD Intern - Data Sciences & Machine Intelligence Internship in Richland, Washington

Overview

The Physical and Computational Sciences Directorate (PCSD) researchers lead major R&D efforts in experimental and theoretical interfacial chemistry, chemical analysis, high energy physics, interfacial catalysis, multifunctional materials, and integrated high-performance and data-intensive computing.

PCSD is PNNL’s primary steward for research supported by the Department of Energy’s Offices of Basic Energy Sciences, Advanced Scientific Computing Research, and Nuclear Physics, all within the Department of Energy's Office of Science.

Additionally, Directorate staff perform research and development for private industry and other government agencies, such as the Department of Defense and NASA. The Directorate's researchers are members of interdisciplinary teams tackling challenges of national importance that cut across all missions of the Department of Energy.

Responsibilities

The Data Science and Machine Intelligence Group is seeking multiple PhD Interns in the broader area of scientific machine learning. The candidate should have experience with or interest in software development and management of scientific data in accordance with the FAIR principles. The candidate will contribute to the research and software development in the field of scientific machine learning. The emphasis will be given to design and implementation of novel scientific machine learning methods for constrained optimization, dynamical systems, and controls with a range of applications in the energy sector. The candidate must be adept at collaborating with interdisciplinary technical teams through strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Mathematical modeling

  • Algorithms to solve complex problems

  • Detailed mathematical analysis of variable relationships

  • Parallel graph algorithms

  • Applies mathematical principles to identify trends in data sets

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates must be currently enrolled/matriculated in a PhD program at an accredited college

  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree in computer science or engineering

  • Strong skills in selected areas of applied mathematics (e.g., linear algebra, dynamical systems, control theory, operations research, machine learning theory)

  • Experience with modern scientific machine learning methods (e.g., Neural ODEs, PINNs, neural operators, learning to optimize, learning to control, graph neural networks)

  • Proficiency in Python language (e.g., Numpy, Pandas, SciPy, Matplotlib)

  • Proficiency in modern machine learning libraries (such as Pytorch or Tensorflow)

  • Familiarity with constrained optimization tools (e.g., CVXPY, JuMP, Gurobi, CPLEX)

  • Experience with bash and Slurm Workload Manager

  • Publication record in scientific conferences such as NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, AAAI, ACC, CDC, or IROS

To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.
