Los Alamos National Laboratory Assembly Technician (Engineered Systems Tec 5) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

J-2, Dynamic Structure Design, Engineering and Vessel Operations group, is responsible for developing and maintaining operational readiness and efficiencies of the vessels for various programs. The Vessel Operations Team within J-2 is responsible for the cradle to grave fielding of tests using 3', 6' and 8' Vessels. This team is looking for mid-career talent to grow into the various operations within the team. The selected candidate(s) will be hired as an Engineered Systems Tec Level 5 pending their relevant experience.

Roles and responsibilities as a member of this team include the following:

  • Assembly and fabrications requiring work with various hand tools, machining tools, and welding operations

  • Support fielding operations at our explosive firing sites, working outside in inclement weather conditions at times

  • Disassembly, decontamination, and recovery operations of our vessel system hardware and waste packaging requiring the use of Personal Protection Equipment and full understanding of working with hazards such as radiological, beryllium, and other heavy metal contaminants

  • Formal record keeping, applying various inspection techniques, drafting documentation packages

  • Working in a variety of industrial facilities requiring training and knowledge of various hazards, such as radiological or confined space, as well as wearing different levels of personal protective equipment

  • Development and implementation of technical procedures and operational safety documents

  • Operating, maintaining, and training others on various mechanical systems

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated work experience in fabrication of complex mechanical assemblies with the ability to execute assignments following design prints and technical procedures.

  • Advanced knowledge and experience with installation, operation, and maintenance of equipment and components of high complexity

  • Demonstrated knowledge and demonstrated work experience in formal record keeping and inventory tracking, ability to development checklists and work instructions for operations

  • Extensive experience working within hazardous areas such as radiological, beryllium or high explosive areas and understanding engineering, administrative, and personal protection controls applied to operations for personal safety

  • Demonstrated experience working in a team environment as well as working independently with minimal supervision

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to interact with all levels of personnel and customers

Education/Experience : An Engineering Technician 5 Position require an Associates' Degree in a related field and a minimum of seven years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience working around high explosives

  • Experience operating overhead cranes, forklifts and other heavy equipment

  • Demonstrated experience performing decontamination of parts and work areas

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Must be able to lift up to 50+ pounds and stand for extended periods of time, with or without reasonable accommodations.

Work Environment: Hazardous environments, e.g., high explosives, confined space, radiological areas.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
