Amazon Data Center Technical Infrastructure Program Manager, Critical Projects Implementation in Herndon, Virginia

The Critical Projects Implementation (CPI) team is a project management and execution team that manages construction projects within the operational data center spaces. The CPI team is tasked with critical infrastructure improvement projects in electrical, fire, mechanical, and structural systems within Amazon’s data center fleet around the globe.

We are currently seeking a Data Center Technical Infrastructure Program Manager (TIPM). You will architect and coordinate complex, high-dollar programs across multiple sites and regions. You will use your technical acumen to identify and drive innovative solutions and deliver results for the customer.

The Data Center TIPM is ultimately responsible for oversight and review of all disciplines including electrical, mechanical, controls, and architectural. A fundamental understanding of these systems is required, as the individual will be expected to identify areas for improvement as well as act on data provided from other teams and/or organizations. Ideal candidates will have a track record of serving as a leader and possess the ability to design, develop and deploy innovative solutions to address operational challenges. This role requires the ability to lead multi-disciplinary, geographically diverse, teams along with providing individual contribution. The scope of projects will include, but not limited to, the improvement of electrical, mechanical, structural, fire detection and building automation system. The TIPM is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, implementation, execution, control and completion of specific projects ensuring consistency with company strategy, commitments and goals. You will frequently find yourself in the center of everything that happens on the team. This role requires a quick thinker, your flexibility and adaptability are key to constantly changing demands and priorities. This role requires strong communication skills to keep affected stakeholders informed and aligned throughout the project execution lifecycle.

This role will be based out of a corporate office (e.g. IAD31). Although the req specifies IAD, candidates from CMH, PDX, or SFO will be considered. This role will require significant (3-4 times per week) data center site visits to support program execution. Domestic travel may be required up to 25% of the time.

Key job responsibilities

• Program management for local and geographically diverse projects to include: oversight of design, construction, and funding activities for capital improvements to operational data centers

• Project scope creation through coordination with affected partner teams

• Driving multiple electrical, fire, mechanical, and/or structural designs associated with the optimization of existing data centers

• Commercial procurement activities, contract negotiation, vendor qualification, and funding submissions

• Direct site supervision of design and construction activities for pilot projects

• Management and forecasting of program schedule and budget

• Coordination of leadership program meetings to include tracking of deliverables/action items

• Total project quality from the creation of commissioning plans to oversight of the execution

• Recording/reporting key metrics to team members, stakeholders, and leadership

• Operational support including review of procedures, best practices, and maintenance initiatives

• Management, oversight, and tracking of internal/external requests for information (RFIs) during design and construction phases

• Ability and willingness to think outside of the box to find innovative solutions to reduce costs with no impact on quality and reliability

• Complex business case analysis with justified recommendations presented to management for review in a document format

• Oversight and support for augmented third-party construction oversight personnel

Basic Qualifications

5+ years of experience managing end-to end execution of CPI projects using different project contract methodologies (design-build, design-bid-build)

Preferred Qualifications

BA/BS in Engineering, Project Management, Construction Management or Technical Project Management

Technical and project management certifications (e.g., Project Management Professional certification, Professional Engineer License, etc.)

Demonstrated ability to understand and discuss technical concepts, manage trade-offs, incorporate feedback, and evaluate opportunistic new ideas with a variety of internal and external stakeholders

Proven track record for developing a vision, defining a strategy, and building programs and features solving complicated problems with elegant, simple solutions

Proven track record of taking ownership and driving results

Strong analytical and quantitative skills with the ability to use data and metrics to back up assumptions, recommendations and decisions

Demonstrated experience thriving in an ambiguous environment and ability to motivate yourself, your managers, and peers to deliver against deadlines

Knowledge of best practices and emerging technologies, related to infrastructure (i.e. network, data center, hardware, software)

Proven track record successfully delivering results in a fast paced, dynamic environment

Detail-oriented with a demonstrated ability to self-motivate and follow-through on projects

Attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple, competing priorities simultaneously
